When stretching, you are supposed to take your muscle to the point where you can feel a slight pull and hold this position for a few seconds without pain or discomfort. However, if you stretch your muscles beyond this, it might result in a pulled muscle -- or muscle strain. As a result, you should discontinue exercise and begin treatment of your pulled muscle from overstretching.
But stretching IS important. If YOU don't care, YOU won't work. Stretching is very important to maintain a well functioning body. But your approach has to be slow.
Muscle strains are often a result of failure to stretch before beginning exercise. Strains most commonly occur in your lower back and in your hamstring. As a simple treatment resting, icing or the an application of an elastic bandage can help.
In YOGA, each pose targets a specific muscle group.
